Great Expectations response 3

Both Pip and Estella have come to some significant realizations in chapters 38-39. Pip has finally come to realize that Estella does not love him. Pip has been following Estella around, but no real "love" connections have occured between the two of them. Pip has finally realized that Estella is not very interested in Pip at all. Pip later on finds out that his benefactor is the convict from earlier on in the book and infact not Miss Havisham or a wealthy person. A reason Pip was so obsessed with the idea of him and Estella could also be due to the fact that Pip thought Miss Havisham was his benefactor and he was meant to be with Estella. Now that Pip knows that his benefactor is not Miss Havisham, and Estella has no interest in him, he comes to realize that Estella is that the girl that he wants and that he has wasted much of his time on ithe idea of himself and Estella. Estella comes to realize that she is the product of Miss Havisham. "I am what you made me. Take all the praise, take all the blame, take all the success, take all the failure. In short, take me." Estella realizes that Miss Havisham has made her treat people the way she does, and be so rude, not at all honest and mean towards her suitors and others.
At this point, Pip could go back to his old life and apologize to Joe and Biddy. Pip could also stay where he is now and act as if nothing has happened to him and his life. Im not really sure if Estella has any options. I think she will stay the way she is now because she has been so molded by Miss Havisham to be the way she is towards other people.

  1. Stephanie, this is a very interesting approach to Pip's and Estella's realizations in chapters 38 and 39. I have never really thought that Pip might just be making a lot of this up in his imagination and he never really experienced a real love connection with Estella. Pip thought that if Ms. Havisham was his benefactor then that meant that Estella loved him and when he found out the convict was his benefactor his dreams were crushed, "Miss Havisham's intentions towards me, all a mere dream; Estella not designed for me; I only suffered in Satis House as a convenience, a sting for the greedy relations, a model with a mechanical heart to practice on when no other practice was at hand; those were the first smarts I had.(pg. 323)" This makes him finally realize that Estella has never and will never love him. I also like you're usement of "product" when talking about how Ms. Havisham has treated Estella her whole life. That word really expresses truly what Estella feels when fighting with Ms. Havisham. "I am what you have made me. Take all the praise, take all the blame; take all the successes, take all the failure; in short, take me.(pg 304)"
All in all i really liked you views on this blog and how you took a different approach to the questions.

  2. Stephanie, I agree with you on several of the points outlined in your blog. I agree that Estella is Miss Havisham's creation and that Estella is not very interested in loving Pip. However, I would like to take your argument further by saying that Estella is incapable of loving, not just Pip, but anyone else as well. She has not experience love and for that reason, she does not have the capacity to give or receive it. I also disagree with idea that because Pip knew who his benefactor was, he realized that Estella and he were not meant for each other. Pip realizes this before his benefactor is revealed, in chapter 38 not in 39, when Estella herself tells him that she does not wish to hurt his feelings by loving him falsely. This devastates him. "Do you want me then, to deceive and entrap you?" (p.
