Option 2:
In many cases, the meaning of a persons name actualy does match up to that persons true looks and personality. In the case of Estella, this holds very true. In the spanish language, the word estrella means star. I also found on an etymology website that the name Estelle is a form of the name Esther which means star. When i think of a star, I think of something beautiful or something that stands out. I also think of a star as a celebrity. Many times celebrities are so caught up in how pretty and famous they are that they are self centered and mean to others that are not as "good" as them. "I think she is very pretty." "Anything else?" "I think she is very insulting." (pg.61) According to Pip, Estella is very pretty on the outside just like a star or celebrity, but she is also very insulting and mean towards Pip. Stars (celebrities) tend to end up being this way when they are very caught up in themselves and think that they are better than everyone else. "Let me see you play cards with this boy." "With this boy! Why he is a common labouring boy!" (pg 60) This quote implies that Estella thinks she is better than Pip and wants nothing to do with a "common labouring boy." The word star definately defines Estella. A self centered, mean personality, good looking girl is the definition of Estella.

I agree with your claim Stephanie! Estella does seem self- centered, mean spirited, and attractive. She is self-centered because she believes she is the best therefore she has the right to insult Pip. On page 60 Estella exclaims, "And what coarse hands he has. And what thick boots!" Someone would only out right insult another if they thought they were better, like Estella has down here. I can also see why you think she is mean. We can see how mean she is when she brings Pip food and as Pip describes it, "Gave me the bread and meat without looking at me, as insolently as if I were a dog in drisgrace." This quote can also show us how she is self centered because again she is looking down on Pip as if he were a dog. When Estella gives Pip the food, he starts to tear up and Pip tells us, "The girl looked at me with quick delight in having been the cause of them." She is so mean that she could be in delight to have caused a seven year old boys tears, that's just evil man! Also Pip tells us she likes, "She likes telling me energetically that she hated me." C'mon she has a horrible-mean personality. Of course she is a good looking girl because it is repeated so often by Pip and Ms. Havishmham. For example Miss Havishham asks Pip, "Does she grow prettier and prettier, Pip?" Pip thinks "of course she does." So I'd have to agree with your description of Estella she is self- centered, mean, and "pretty".
ReplyDeleteI agree with the both of you. In Latin, the word "Stella" means stars, and the word "ex or e" means out of. Therefore, Estella means "out of the stars". She does think that she is as beautiful as the stars in the sky, which is clearly a large statement. I think this comes from the fact that her whole life people have been telling her that she is beautiful. Also, the fact that she is "from the stars" is almost like she is from a different world than everyone else, much like the celebrities of today. Also like them, she is put up on a pedistool by Pip, Ms. Havisham, and basically every young man she meets. Because of this, she has developed a very vain and harsh personality, partly because she feels nobody is good enough for her, because of how she has been raised. Estella is a complicated charactor, who i think is just looking for love.
